By Jones Gadama

The Malawi Tourism Authority is expected to become operational by August, Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule has announced.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, Kamtukule disclosed that the constitution of the board is the final step before hiring the authority’s director general and management team.

The new Tourism Act 2025, recently assented to by President Lazarus Chakwera, replaces the outdated Tourism Act of 1968.

This development marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to revitalize its tourism sector.

The Tourism Authority will oversee standardization, tourism product development, and management of the tourism fund.

The minister emphasized that the new law will enhance marketing efforts through a coordinated brand and division of roles.

This move is expected to boost the sector’s contribution to the country’s economic growth and development, aligning with the Malawi 2063 vision.

With nearly 1 million tourists visiting Malawi annually, the government is optimistic about the sector’s potential to drive economic growth.

The establishment of the Malawi Tourism Authority is a crucial step towards achieving this goal.
