Malawi nets K70.7 b from Tobacco in the first four weeks of sales

By Phillimon Backson
Malawi has earned K70.7 billion from 19.3 million kilogrammes of tobacco sold in the first four weeks of the 2026 marketing season, marking a 21 percent decline in revenue compared to the same period last year.
According to the report released on 19, May, 2026, the sales were recorded between April 20 and May 14, 2026, at an average price of 2.12 US dollars per kilogramme.
TC Spokesperson, Telephorus Chigwenembe, says during the same period in 2025, the country sold 22.4 million kilogrammes worth K86.6 billion at an average price of 2.32 US dollars per kilogramme.

The development comes amid concerns over lower prices and high tobacco rejection rates this season, largely attributed to an oversupply on the global market.
The Tobacco Commission projects production at about 197 million kilogrammes this year against an estimated buyer demand of 170 million kilogrammes.
