Never Matewere Questions Credibility of FAMA Awards, Calls for Unity in Malawi’s Film Industry

By Rahim Abdul

Veteran filmmaker Never Matewere has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent Film Association of Malawi (FAMA) awards, raising concerns over the credibility of the selection process.

He said the outcome of the awards did not fairly reflect the contributions of some filmmakers within the local industry.

Matewere alleged that there may have been irregularities in the awards process, warning that such practices risk discouraging genuine talent and suppressing deserving artists.

He believes his work and long-standing contribution to filmmaking should have earned him recognition.

Despite his criticism, Matewere urged fellow filmmakers to avoid jealousy and internal divisions. He called for unity and collaboration, saying collective effort is essential for the growth and development of Malawi’s film industry.

Responding to the claims, FAMA Secretary Scot Kaphinde strongly denied any wrongdoing. He maintained that the association conducts its activities transparently and professionally, adding that the awards were fair and free from favoritism or manipulation.

Never Matewere has produced several well-known films, including The Most Wanted Man, The Invisible Beast, Nachipanti and The Last Road Block, which have contributed to shaping Malawi’s film landscape.
