MCP MP ditches party for independent bid

By Jones Gadama

In a shocking move, Illias Karim, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Chikwawa South, has announced that he will be contesting as an independent candidate in the upcoming elections.

Karim cited a survey he conducted in his constituency, which revealed that the MCP is unpopular in the area, and people advised him to ditch the party if he wants to win.

Speaking in an interview, Karim said, “According to the survey I conducted in Chikwawa, MCP isn’t loved, and people advised me that if I want to win, I should not use MCP but independence. I accepted the wish of the people.” This bold decision marks a significant departure from his current affiliation with the MCP.

Karim’s comments also suggest that the MCP is facing significant challenges in the southern region and some parts of the central region. “MCP under Chakwera is dead in the south and some parts of the central region,” he stated. This assertion raises questions about the party’s viability and popularity in these areas.

The decision to run as an independent candidate is not one to be taken lightly, and Karim’s move is likely to have implications for the MCP and the broader political landscape in Malawi.

As an independent candidate, Karim will have the freedom to chart his own course and connect with voters without the burden of party affiliation.
