Government says it expects private schools to adhere to minimum operating standards set by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, citing quality infrastructure, required teaching and learning materials as well as qualified and registered teachers.
Speaking during the official opening of the 2025 Independent Schools Association of Malawi ( ISAMA) Annual Conference in Blantyre on Wednesday, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima said her technical team is always available to support Independent Schools hence they should consult them for proper guidance.
Wirima said government appreciates the critical role played by the Independent Schools in complementing its effort in the provision of basic and secondary education in Malawi.
“The theme of this year’s conference resonates well with our government development goals of 2063. Through the Malawi 2063, education plays a catalytic role in making Malawi a wealth creating nation. We have a huge task of providing this nation the much-needed human resource in all sectors of development,” she emphasised.
Speaking earlier, ISAMA President, Bishop Wycliffe Chimwendo said this year’s theme, ‘Advancing Quality Education in Independent Schools: By Embracing Inclusiveness, Digitalisation, and Corporate Governance for a Sustainable Future,” resonates well with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education’s mission statement to offer quality education to all learners, relevant in answering today’s challenges and equip learners with new skills in both public and private schools in Malawi.
“I would like to assure you that ISAMA is committed to supporting our schools and the ministry in quest of excellence. We will continue to advocate for policies and programmes that benefit our members and promote quality education in our country,” he said.
