Malawian students head to global tech4good finals in China

Five students from various local universities in Malawi have traveled to Shenzhen, China, to participate in the Tech4Good global finals, a prestigious competition that showcases innovative solutions to social issues through digital technologies.

The students, who emerged victorious in the sub-Saharan regional finals, are set to compete against top teams from around the world, demonstrating their skills and creativity in addressing pressing social challenges.



The winning team comprises talented individuals from some of Malawi’s top universities, including Grace Gausi from Malawi University of Business and Applied Science, Nyasha Chinthu from Malawi University of Science and Technology, Steve Tsekani from the University of Malawi, Tayamika Kaponda from the National College of Information Technology, and Victoria Kankhokwe from Mzuzu University.

Huawei Technologies, the organizer of the Tech4Good program, has been instrumental in supporting the students’ journey to the global finals.

Tao An, Managing Director of Huawei Malawi, expressed excitement in supporting the students, highlighting the company’s commitment to nurturing young talent and developing ICT skills in Malawi.

“Their success is a testament to the incredible potential within Malawi and the growing interest in ICT among young people,” An said, adding that,”We are proud to support these talented students and look forward to seeing their innovative solutions make a positive impact on society.”

Tech4Good is a Huawei entrepreneurship program designed to help young adults learn about the latest trends in digitalization and explore how digital technologies can address common social issues.

The program provides a platform for students to showcase their skills, creativity, and innovative thinking, while also promoting the development of ICT skills and entrepreneurship.

The Malawian team’s victory in the regional competition has put the country on the global map in terms of technological innovation, with high expectations for their performance in the global finals.
