Floods Wreak Havoc in Mangochi

By Shaffie A Mtambo

The recent floods in Mangochi, along the Nansenga River, have left a trail of destruction and devastation in their wake. The disaster has claimed the lives of three people, injured 48 others, and affected over 1,156 households in Traditional Authorities Mapira, Chimwala, and Mponda.

The floods, caused by heavy rains in the past six days, have completely damaged 22 structures and washed away property and livestock downstream into Lake Malombe. Villagers from the affected areas, including Steven, Chilunda, Kafucheche, Mpinganjira 1, and Mpinganjira 2, have been left to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives.

In response to the disaster, the Mangochi District Council has set up camps at Mpinganjira Primary, Namsenga Community Day, and Changamire Primary Schools to provide shelter and assistance to those affected. According to Bishop Witmos, spokesperson for the Mangochi District Council, the council is working tirelessly to provide aid and support to the affected communities.

As the people of Mangochi struggle to come to terms with the devastation caused by the floods, it is clear that the road to recovery will be long and challenging. However, with the support of the district council and other aid organizations, there is hope for rebuilding and restarting.
