Dowa farmers urged to embrace climate-smart agriculture

By Burnett Munthali
Farmers in Dowa District are being encouraged to adopt climate-smart agricultural technologies and form cooperatives to improve productivity and access reliable markets.
This call was made by Chief Agricultural Officer for Dowa East, Japheth Zingani, during a field day held at Mndolera and Mponela Extension Planning Areas (EPAs).
Various farming innovations were showcased to local farmers during the event, highlighting the importance of embracing modern technologies in agriculture.

Zingani emphasized that climate change continues to pose serious challenges to agricultural production, making it necessary for farmers to adapt to changing weather patterns.
The adoption of climate-smart technologies is crucial for improving crop yields and reducing the impact of climate change on agriculture.
By working together and forming cooperatives, farmers can also access better markets and improve their livelihoods.
Dowa District Council Chairperson Billy Mtika also weighed in on the issue, urging, “Farmers should always seek advice from agricultural extension workers in their farming activities in order to increase productivity.”
This advice is particularly relevant in the context of climate change, where farmers need to be equipped with the right knowledge and skills to adapt to changing weather patterns.
The field day event was an opportunity for farmers to learn about new technologies and innovations that can help them improve their agricultural practices.
By embracing these technologies and working together, farmers in Dowa District can increase their productivity and improve their livelihoods.
