Chakwera urges Malawians to register for 2025 General Elections
By Burnett Munthali
President Lazarus Chakwera has called on all eligible Malawians to register for the 2025 general elections, emphasizing that participation in elections is both a constitutional right and a civic duty. Speaking during a Special Address to the Nation on Tuesday evening, the President highlighted the ongoing voter registration exercise conducted by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
“MEC has already completed two phases of the registration exercise, and the third phase is underway. I encourage all Malawians to register so that we can fully exercise our democratic right to vote,” Chakwera said.
President Chakwera expressed concern over reports of low voter registration in areas affected by food insecurity, where some citizens have reportedly shown reluctance to register. He also condemned attempts by some politicians to discourage people from participating in the process.
“Voting in our elections is a constitutional right, and it is important to register. We should not surrender our rights to any excuse or external influence. For those with grievances about the registration process, let the courts address those disputes,” he added.
The President used the address to denounce recent incidents of political violence, echoing the sentiments of three former heads of state—Dr. Joyce Banda, Professor Peter Mutharika, and Dr. Bakili Muluzi.
“We have already seen a political party member murdered in Blantyre and demonstrators being intimidated in Lilongwe. These acts of violence will take our country nowhere,” Chakwera lamented.
He urged the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to conduct thorough investigations and ensure all perpetrators are held accountable.
“Malawians are peace-loving people, and those who misuse their political freedoms or rights to demonstrate for violent purposes must not be allowed to tarnish our reputation as a beacon of democracy,” the President stated.
President Chakwera concluded his address by urging citizens to embrace peace and fully participate in the democratic process. He reiterated the importance of voter registration as a foundation for a credible and inclusive election in 2025.
“As Malawians, we must reject violence and division, and instead, work together to ensure that next year’s elections reflect the will of the people. Let us register and make our voices heard,” he said.
The 2025 general elections will be a critical moment for Malawi, and the President’s call underscores the need for unity, vigilance, and active participation in shaping the country’s democratic future.
