By Chisomo Phiri

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC ) has refuted allegations that it has endorsed one of the candidates in the July 23, 2024 by-election in Mwasa Ward in Mangochi North East Constituency.

This follows claims that the commission has endorsed a candidate in the by-elections based on the fact the candidate will be first on the ballot paper.

But in a statement, MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa, says MEC is a non-partisan body and does not support or oppose any candidate or political party.

“Our responsibility is to administer and manage the electoral process fairly and transparently,” says Mwafulirwa.

He further explains that the arrangement and positioning of candidate names on the ballot paper is based on the alphabetical order of surnames.

Mwafulirwa has since urged candidates, political party leaders and their followers to stick to the code of conduct for the by-election and desist from dragging the commission into partisan campaign gimmicks.

Mwansa Ward fell vacant on 15 August 2022 following the death of councillor Edna Yusuf Jose, who until her death was Mayor for Mangochi.

Six candidates are contesting in the by-election.
