By Chisomo Phiri
Police in Area 3, Lilongwe, have arrested a 32-year-old man, Aubrey Madzinkusamba, for allegedly throwing his two biological children, an 8-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, into a 30-meter deep well with the intention of killing them.
The children miraculously survived for three days.
According to Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Inspector Hastings Chigalu, the incident occurred on July 6, 2024, in Matapa Village, Likuni, following a dispute between the suspect and his wife.
Chigalu says, the suspect and his wife had quarreled over family matters on July 4, 2024, and agreed to divorce.
Fearing that his wife would take the children after the divorce, Madzinkusamba planned to kill them to prevent either parent from having custody.
“Without his wife’s knowledge, Madzinkusamba took the kids and threw them into an unused 30-meter deep well near Nkhalango Clinic in Likuni for the children to die,” says Chigalu.
He says when the children went missing, the mother became suspicious.
“Despite repeatedly asking about their whereabouts, Madzinkusamba claimed the children were safe.
“After failing to find them at relatives’ and friends’ homes for three days, the mother reported the matter to Chinsapo Police Unit.
“Detectives detained and interrogated Madzinkusamba, who eventually confessed to throwing the children into the well to prevent any custody issues post-divorce.
“Police, guided by the suspect, rushed to the scene and found the children alive, with their heads just above the water. Community members and police used a bucket tied to ropes to rescue the children one by one.
“They were immediately taken to Bwaila District Hospital for medical attention and later referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital, where they are currently admitted,” adds Chigalu.
Aubrey Madzinkusamba who comes from Kasiya Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Khongoni in Lilongwe District, will soon appear in court to face charges of attempted murder.
