By Chisomo Phiri
On Tuesday May 7,2024, a group of United Transformation Movement (UTM) members gathered in Lilongwe to march, chant, and celebrate the recent court decision, to free Vice President Saulos Chilima from corruption case.
The procession began at the Golden Peacock Supermarket and proceeded through Area 11, concluding at the party’s headquarters in Area 10.
When approached for comment, Party Secretary General Patricia Kaliati confirmed the celebration was in response to Chilima’s court relief but declined to provide further details.
“We are celebrating the outcome of the court case involving Rt. Honorable Saulos Chilima. I’m not available for an interview at this time, but you’re welcome to join us in our celebration and thanksgiving,” she said.
The High Court of Malawi’s Financial Crimes Division on Monday discharged Chilima from a corruption case that had been ongoing since 2022.
His legal representatives expressed hope that the State will not revisit the matter in the future.
High Court Judge Redson Kapindu issued the order following a certificate of discontinuance from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Masauko Chamkakala on May 3, 2024.
