The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has tasked relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the obstruction of President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy in Blantyre on Friday.

The president’s convoy was blocked at HHI roundabout by angry mourners from Ndirande Town who were on funeral procession.

The convoy was coming from Sanjika Palace heading to Chileka Airport via Magalasi Road where Chakwera was to board a plane off to DRC Congo.

In a statement made available to 247 Malawi News,NAP Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe says they are calling for the identification and swift prosecuting of those responsible for the acts.

According Kondowe, the acts are a violation of the security and well-being of the Head of State and also not only jeopardise the lives of those directly affected but undermine the fundamental principles of democratic governance and the rule of law.

Speaks Kondowe in the statement: “Obstructing and stoning the presidential motorcade not only pose immediate threats to the safety of the President but also set a perilous precedent, potentially leading to a deterioration of public order, instilling fear, and corroding trust in democratic institutions.”

The NAP Chairperson has also faulted the random decision to redeploy the police commissioner of the region and other police officers without due process, as mandated by Section 43 of the Republican Constitution.
