Hijab row in Malawi defence force

By Rahim Abdul

The Hijab Task Force (HTF), a prominent religious advocacy group in Malawi, has written to the Ministry of Defence, seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the alleged ban on Muslim female personnel wearing the hijab while on duty.

According to reports, the restriction has sparked concerns about the infringement of constitutional rights.

In a strongly-worded letter, HTF Spokesperson Abdus-salaam Faduweck emphasized the group’s commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of Muslim women in Malawi.

“The right to freedom of religion is enshrined in our constitution, and this includes the right to wear attire that is consistent with one’s faith,” Faduweck stated.

The HTF has called for a peaceful resolution to the issue, and has requested a meeting with the Ministry of Defence to discuss the matter further.

The group’s efforts are seen as a crucial step in promoting religious tolerance and understanding within the country’s defence forces.
