Chakwera mourns departed Pope Emeritus

President Lazarus Chakwera has joined the rest of the world in mourning the death of former Pope Benedict XVI who died on Saturday December 31,2022 at his Vatican residence at the age of 95.

Writing on his official facebook page on Saturday, President Chakwera said he learnt with shock and regret about the passing of Benedict.



Chakwera said Emeritus will be fondly remembered for impacting mankind positively through advancement of hope and love to communities around the world.

“We join the Roman Catholic Church here in Malawi and across the globe in paying homage to a great servant of God who was the fortress of wisdom for all generations he encountered.

May his soul rest in eternal peace,” wrote Malawi leader.

Benedict XVI was from Germany and was born in April, 1927.

He became Pope in 2005 when he replaced John Paul II.

However, in an unusual move, he stepped down due to ill-health and was replaced by Pope Francis.

According Vatican funeral announcement, his body will be placed in St Peter’s Basilica from January 2,2022 for “the greeting of faithful “.
