Kachaje plays down fuel shortage fears- tells Malawians not to panic

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority-Mera has indicated that Malawians need to understand that fuel business is no different from other businesses, therefore is bound to encounter some challenges. this follows as the Authority has raised a red flag on fuel in the country, as the current stock will last a little more than a week .

This follows reports on Thursday about fuel shortage, indicating also that Malawians need to understand that fuel business is no different from other businesses, therefore is bound to encounter some challenges.Its Chief Executive Officer Henry Kachaje said this during a press briefing in Lilongwe, where he said social media speculations disrupt distribution of fuel and inconvinience the citizenry, due to panic.

There was an alarm yesterday that some service stations had run out of the product.Kachaje has added that Mera is monitoring the situation right now, and that 93% of service stations in the country have fuel, and only 7% have insufficient commodity due to some logistical challenges.

However, Kachaje has told journalists that maintainance at the Beira Port in Mozambique caused congestion, as ships had not yet docked at the port to offload over the festive season, with some Malawian trucks now loading.
