NRNC Concerned Over Poor Performance of Northern Region Teams in FDH Premier Netball League

The Northern Region Netball Committee (NRNC) has expressed deep concern over the disappointing performance of teams representing the region in the first phase of the FDH Premier Netball League.
According to the latest standings, Ekwendeni Resource finished 11th with just 4 points, while Karonga Queens ended the phase at the bottom of the table in 12th place without a single point.
NRNC General Secretary Ken Phiri said the results are a clear reflection of the weakening strength of northern-based teams, despite being strong contenders in regional competitions.

“It’s worrying to see that teams which dominate our regional tournaments are struggling to compete against teams from other regions,” said Phiri.
He attributed the poor results mainly to financial challenges, noting that most northern teams lose their top players to better-funded sides from the Central and Southern regions.
“Whenever our teams develop talented players, they are quickly taken by other clubs that can afford to offer them better support and incentives,” he explained.
Phiri further expressed fear that if the current situation continues, northern teams may face relegation from the FDH Premier Netball League.
He appealed to corporate organizations and sports enthusiasts to come forward and financially support teams from the region to help them retain their players and improve performance.
“Our teams need serious financial backing to compete at the national level. Without that, we risk losing our identity and representation in the country’s top-tier netball league,” added Phiri.
The FDH Premier Netball League, which features top teams from across Malawi, continues to expose the growing gap in competitiveness among regions with the Northern Region now facing an urgent need for investment and development in its netball structures.
