By Burnett Munthali
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) drew large crowds to its mega rally at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu on Saturday, where attendees were treated to a captivating theme song for the party’s 2025 elections campaign. The song, titled “Peter Wabecha Loya,” performed by the popular Sendera Sisters, has garnered much praise for its catchy melody and poignant lyrics.
Described by many as potentially timeless, the song resonates with the party’s supporters, reinforcing DPP’s message as they gear up for the upcoming elections. One enthusiastic attendee remarked, “It seems nyimbo zabwino zimakhala ku DPP” (Good songs seem to be at DPP), emphasizing her excitement to witness the Sendera Sisters’ performance. “Amatha kuyimba anthuwa” (These women can sing).
The lyrics of “Peter Wabecha Loya” address pressing issues, notably accusing the current government of rampant corruption and a lack of effective governance. The song confidently asserts that Peter Muthalika will emerge victorious in the next elections, reflecting the optimism of DPP supporters. Matheus Chisi, an aspiring shadow MP for Nkhatabay North constituency, praised the song, stating, “Nyimbo iyi njowinila akulu” (This song is for the leaders).
The Sendera Sisters have a rich history with the DPP, having gained prominence during the presidency of Bingu wa Muthalika around 2010. Their electrifying performances have consistently energized party rallies, solidifying their place in Malawi’s political and musical landscape.
As the DPP ramps up its campaign efforts, the enthusiasm generated by the Sendera Sisters and their resonant theme song is expected to play a significant role in rallying support as the party aims for a strong showing in the 2025 elections. With music serving as both a unifying force and a vehicle for political messaging, the DPP is poised to capitalize on the power of song in its quest for leadership.
