Malawi Making Strides in Early Childhood Math Education, Says Minister Kabwila

By Durell Namasani
Minister of Higher Education Dr. Jessie Kabwila has announced that Malawi is making significant progress in improving early childhood education, particularly in mathematics, as part of a national program aligned with the Malawi 2063 (MW2063) vision.
Speaking at a Southern African Development Community (SADC) meeting of education ministers, Dr. Kabwila highlighted the country’s efforts during a special session focused on enhancing reading, writing, and math skills in early-grade learners across the region.

She explained that Malawi has reformed its approach to teaching mathematics in Standards 1 to 4, benefiting over 2.2 million learners in Standards 1 and 2 nationwide, as well as students in Standards 3 and 4 in select pilot schools.
To support the initiative, the government has trained more than 30,000 teachers in the new teaching methodology. Additionally, 4.7 million workbooks and teacher guides have been distributed to ensure both educators and students have the necessary materials each school term.
Dr. Kabwila is set to participate in the final session of the SADC Ministers’ Meeting later today.
