Blantyre City Council raises alarm over rising vandalism of streetlight poles

By Rahim Abdul
Blantyre City Council has sounded a strong warning after a fresh wave of vandalism targeting streetlight poles hit parts of the city, particularly along Makata Road.
The council says the latest incident happened on Friday night, leaving concrete poles shattered and electrical cables ripped out, as shown in the photographs shared in their public notice.

According to the council, the situation has become a growing concern with unknown individuals repeatedly vandalising and stealing essential streetlighting infrastructure.
This behavior is not only illegal but also dangerous for motorists and pedestrians who rely on proper road lighting for safety, especially at night.
Officials say the damage comes at a huge cost, forcing the council to divert money meant for other development projects to replace the destroyed poles. They warn that such acts slow down progress and put the lives of city residents at risk.
The council is now appealing to the public to help curb the malpractice. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or individuals seen tampering with street furniture. Reports can be made at any nearby police station or directly to the council.
Blantyre City Council has provided two emergency contacts for information that could lead to arrests: the toll-free line 526 and the Council’s Security and Law Enforcement Division on 0884 500 099.
Authorities say community cooperation is key in ending the cycle of vandalism and ensuring that Blantyre remains a safe, well-lit, and thriving city for all.
