CDEDI Seeks Clarity on K2 Billion UK Trip Amid Public Tax Concerns

By Rahim Abdul
The Centre for Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has expressed concern over the reported K2 billion spent on a recent trip to the United Kingdom involving Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Jane Ansah, calling for openness and accountability from authorities.
Addressing journalists during a press briefing, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa said the organisation intends to engage Dr. Ansah directly to understand the purpose and outcomes of the high-cost foreign visit.
Namiwa said the matter has sparked public debate largely because it comes at a time when Malawians are struggling with newly introduced taxes that have increased the cost of living.

He noted that while government officials may undertake international trips for diplomatic or development reasons, such expenditures must be justified, especially when citizens are under economic strain.
According to Namiwa, an amount as high as K2 billion raises serious questions about prioritisation of public resources and demands a clear explanation before any judgment can be made.
He stressed that CDEDI prefers dialogue over confrontation, adding that meeting the Vice President would allow the organisation to hear the government’s side of the story.
Namiwa also applauded Malawians who have openly spoken out on the issue, saying their reactions reflect a growing culture of civic engagement and accountability.
He described the public response as evidence that Malawians are becoming more alert and willing to question decisions involving public funds.
The CDEDI boss further encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and continue demanding transparency, particularly as the international community closely monitors governance practices in Malawi.
He concluded by saying that responsible use of public resources, coupled with open communication, is critical in restoring public trust and ensuring development efforts truly benefit the people.
