PAC urges opposition leaders to promote peace ahead of 2025 Elections

By Burnett Munthali
The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has called on opposition political leaders in Malawi to publicly promote peace and calm as the nation approaches the 2025 general elections.
The call comes in response to growing political tension and concerns about violence during campaign rallies and public gatherings.
According to PAC, it is important that all political players adopt a responsible tone and language in their messaging to avoid inciting violence among supporters.

PAC’s statement comes shortly after President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera issued a special message calling for unity, peace, and respect for the democratic rights of all political actors.
In his address, President Chakwera emphasized that every party and individual has the right to hold campaign rallies anywhere in the country without facing discrimination or intimidation.
The president’s message has been widely interpreted as a strong commitment to democratic values and tolerance in the lead-up to the elections.
PAC’s spokesperson, Bishop Gilford Matonga, noted that opposition leaders should follow this example by encouraging their followers to abstain from any form of violence.
He stressed that it is the duty of all political leaders to ensure that their supporters are not involved in acts of provocation or disruption during political activities.
Bishop Matonga further highlighted that President Chakwera’s remarks are not only timely but also carry an important lesson for all stakeholders to reflect on.
He said the remarks should serve as a guide for fostering a peaceful and successful electoral process in 2025.
PAC believes that with collective effort and responsible leadership, Malawi can conduct issue-based campaigns and peaceful elections that reflect the will of the people.
The committee has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and civic education throughout the election period.
