Empowering future innovators: MEI urges Chikwawa Girls To Join Engineering

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Engineering Institution (MEI) has called on secondary school girls in Chikwawa District to consider joining the engineering profession as a means of helping to build a better world.

This inspiring appeal was made by Mirriam Nsomba, Chairperson of the Women in Engineering chapter of MEI.

She was speaking at Ngabu Secondary School during a career talk that brought together female learners from three schools in the Ngabu Cluster.

The students in attendance included girls from Ngabu Secondary School itself, along with those from two surrounding community day secondary schools—Makande and Nkhwangwa.

Nsomba emphasized that the institution is eager to see more women entering the engineering field.

She explained that this goal is what drives the Women in Engineering chapter to organize career guidance sessions specifically targeting girls in secondary schools.

According to Nsomba, their mission is to break the gender barriers that have historically kept women from fully participating in science, technology, and engineering careers.

One of the students who took part in the event, Angella Omar, a Form 3 learner at Ngabu Secondary School, expressed her excitement and motivation following the session.

She said that the career talk had inspired her to dream of becoming an engineer in the future.

The school’s head teacher, Nickson Kaitano, also commended the initiative, thanking the engineers for taking time to speak to the girls.

Kaitano praised the team from MEI for coming to the Ngabu Cluster to engage and inspire female learners to aim high in their academic and professional aspirations.

The career talk was part of broader efforts by MEI and other stakeholders to promote gender inclusion in technical professions and to ensure that girls in Malawi have access to information and encouragement to pursue careers in science and engineering.
