The Phalombe District Council has launched a K154 million rehabilitation project for the Sombani Water Scheme and Phalombe Minor, which were heavily damaged by Cyclone Freddy.

The project aims to improve access to clean water for over 8,000 people in the area.

Speaking during the launch, Phalombe District Commissioner Douglas Moffat said the project will include the installation of heavy-duty pipes to channel water to the main reservoir.

The project is expected to be completed within 90 days and is being implemented by the Malawi Government with funding from the World Bank’s Regional Climate Resilience Programme.

Local utility operator Peter Chiotcha welcomed the initiative, noting that the number of people served by the water scheme will increase from 3,430 to over 8,000.

Traditional Authority MKhumba hailed the government for the timely intervention, saying it will help reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases in her area.
