Social cash transfer programme uplifts lives of elderly graduates in Rumphi

By Burnett Munthali

Some elderly beneficiaries who recently graduated from the Social Cash Transfer Programme in the area of Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi have expressed gratitude for the positive economic changes the initiative has brought into their lives.

Speaking to Zodiak Online, Dekapose Mkandawire of Magawa Village shared how the programme has transformed his life.

He revealed that with the support received, he has managed to construct a decent house, install piped water, and adequately support his household.

Mkandawire encouraged the new recipients of the programme to invest the funds into sustainable economic activities such as small-scale businesses.

He emphasized that venturing into income-generating enterprises is key to achieving long-term economic independence.

Another graduate of the programme, Trytis Chirwa, echoed Mkandawire’s sentiments by highlighting the tangible benefits she has enjoyed.

Chirwa said that through the programme’s assistance, she has been able to care for her grandchildren and secure basic necessities for her family.

These testimonies underscore the impact of the Social Cash Transfer Programme in uplifting vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly in rural communities.

The Social Cash Transfer Programme is a critical component of the broader Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project.

This initiative is funded by a Multi-Donor Trust Fund in partnership with the World Bank.

It aims to improve resilience among poor and ultra-poor households through direct cash transfers and complementary support mechanisms.

The success stories from Rumphi demonstrate the importance of social protection initiatives in addressing poverty and empowering marginalized populations.

As Malawi continues to face economic hardships, such programmes offer a model for inclusive development and sustainable livelihood transformation.
