Tragedy strikes Lusaka: Three siblings laid to rest after lightning-induced fire

By Burnett Munthali
A heart-wrenching funeral ceremony is currently underway in Lusaka, Zambia, where three young siblings from the same family are being laid to rest following their tragic death in a fire accident.
The deceased children, identified as Nathan Phiri aged 7, Emmanuel Phiri aged 4, and Subilo Phiri aged 2, lost their lives on Friday evening when a lightning strike hit their home, triggering a devastating blaze.

According to reports, the children were alone in the house at the time of the incident, as their father had gone out to fetch their mother during a heavy downpour that was affecting Lusaka on that fateful day.
It is believed that the lightning bolt struck the family house, igniting a fire that quickly engulfed the structure while the children were inside.
It remains unclear whether the door to the house was locked or open at the time of the incident—an unknown that adds to the haunting sorrow surrounding the tragedy, as it might have affected their chances of escape.
The deaths of Nathan, Emmanuel, and Subilo have sent shockwaves across the community and the nation at large, with many expressing deep grief and disbelief over the sudden and cruel loss of such young lives.
Social media platforms and local community forums have been flooded with messages of condolence and solidarity with the bereaved family, highlighting the collective mourning that has gripped Zambia.
At the funeral, which is currently in progress, scores of mourners have gathered to offer their final respects to the children and support their grieving parents.
The atmosphere is heavy with sorrow as relatives, friends, neighbors, and sympathizers weep openly, unable to fully comprehend the magnitude of the loss.
The children’s parents, overwhelmed by the tragedy, are being comforted by loved ones as they struggle to come to terms with the unimaginable pain of losing three children in a single, unforeseeable incident.
As the funeral rites proceed, clergy members and local leaders are also present, offering prayers and words of comfort while urging the community to remain united and supportive of the grieving family during this difficult time.
The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers that natural forces can pose, especially in areas vulnerable to extreme weather events.
It has also ignited conversations around household safety, emergency response, and the need for better public awareness during thunderstorms.
While nothing can bring back the young lives lost, the outpouring of grief and solidarity across Zambia shows a nation united in compassion and mourning.
As the tiny coffins are lowered into the ground, tears flow freely, and a somber silence falls over the cemetery—a collective goodbye to three innocent souls who were taken too soon.
May Nathan, Emmanuel, and Subilo rest in eternal peace.
