Power Dynamos make history into CAF Champions League group stage

By Rahim Abdul

Power Dynamos have etched their name in Zambian football history by becoming the first club from the country to reach the CAF Champions League group stage since Zesco United achieved the feat in 2019.

The Copperbelt-based side sealed their spot after edging out Ugandan champions Vipers SC 3-2 on aggregate in a tightly contested two-legged encounter.

The Zambian champions displayed resilience and tactical discipline throughout the tie, ensuring that their dream of returning Zambia to continental prominence became a reality.

Their progression marks a significant moment for Zambian football, which has been searching for consistent representation at the elite level of African club competition.

Malawi international forward Chifundo Mphasi was notably absent from both legs of the clash against Vipers due to an injury that has kept him sidelined for the last three matches.

Despite his absence in the decisive round, Mphasi’s earlier contributions were vital particularly during Dynamos’ impressive elimination of Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas, a result that paved the way for their showdown with the Ugandan champions.

The Zambian outfit’s journey to the group stages has been marked by determination, teamwork and belief.

Under the guidance of their technical team, Dynamos have rekindled the spirit that once made Zambian clubs feared across the continent.

Fans in Kitwe and across Zambia celebrated the qualification with jubilation, seeing it as a signal of better days ahead for Zambian club football.

The achievement not only boosts the club’s morale but also enhances Zambia’s reputation in African football.
