NOCMA Expects 12 Million Litres of Fuel to Arrive in Malawi Next Week
By Burnett Munthali
The National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) has announced that it expects a total of 12 million litres of fuel to arrive in the country by next week. According to NOCMA spokesperson Raymond Likambale, the incoming shipment will consist of 9.1 million litres of petrol and 3.4 million litres of diesel.
Likambale stated that the fuel suppliers are currently loading the fuel onto transportation vehicles, and preparations are underway to ensure the smooth delivery of the fuel into Malawi.
“We are doing everything possible to manage the foreign currency challenges that are affecting payments for fuel imports,” Likambale said.
Meanwhile, the Transporters Association of Malawi (TAM) has acknowledged the current challenges but has urged the government, through the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), to avoid spreading misinformation regarding the fuel procurement process.
In recent months, the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) advised MERA to consider increasing fuel prices to help prevent fuel shortages in the country, citing the need to stabilize supply amidst growing economic pressures.
