By Chisomo Phiri
One of the presidential aspirants in the 2025 tripartite elections Ras Chikomeni Chirwa says he has now started selling cannabis to raise Malawi Electoral Commission(MEC) nomination fees.
According to Chirwa, his Rastafarai
church has obtained a licence from the Cannabis Regulatory Authority (CRA) to cultivate and distribute cannabis for a period of one year.
He says he is using the licence that has been granted to the church to sell the cannabis and that on top of that he is selling Tshirts as another strategy to mobilize finances.
“It is true. What we want is to raise funds for MEC nomination fees,” says Chirwa.
Meanwhile,Political Analyst Chimwemwe Tsitsi has commended Chirwa for embarking on fund raising initiative and has advised him to seek for more donor support.
“He has started a good initiative and we wish him well,” says Tsitsi.
In 2019,Chirwa attempted to run for presidency but was disqualified by MEC due to his failure to pay the required 2 million kwacha nomination fee, which was required for presidential candidates.
He then endorsed the then incumbent Peter Mutharika who emerged winner.
