Police at Area 3 in Lilongwe are keeping in custody two men, on suspicion that they have been posing as taxi operators, attacking and robbing unsuspecting passengers’ property.
The two Alick Kazembe, 42, of Malenya Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Makanjira, Mangochi, and Moses Mponda, 35, from Madzianyanja Village, (T/A) M’bwatalika in Lilongwe district were arrested on January 25,2024.
Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer Hastings Chigalu says, operating as a taxi using a Swift motor vehicle registration number LA 8878, the suspects, alongside two others, offered a lift to a certain man (name withheld), at MRA roundabout at around 20:00 hours on January 21, 2024 who was on his way to Kabudula Trading Centre.
“However, upon arrival at Balon Estate along the road, the suspects attacked and robbed the victim assorted items all valued at K700 thousand.
“After receipt of the complaint, Lilongwe Police detectives instituted investigations that led to the arrest of the two suspects, and recovery of MSCE, Diploma, and Medical Council certificates, and clothes, among others,” says Chigalu.
He says the manhunt for the other suspects is currently underway.
Kazembe and Mponda will appear in court soon to answer robbery charges.
