Govt pledges inclusive development for persons with disabilities

Vice-President Jane Ansah has reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left out of any development programme, emphasizing that inclusion is central to Malawi’s national development agenda.

Speaking at the launch of the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) Flag Week at parliament building in Lilongwe on Friday, Ansah said all development interventions are being designed to reach every Malawian, including those with disabilities.

Said the VP:”The government of Malawi, led by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, believes that Malawi belongs to everyone, regardless of gender, tribe, or disability.

“Our national development agenda is built on this principle, ensuring that every Malawian benefits from the country’s growth. Our policies and actions are guided by this commitment.”

Ansah directed local councils to ensure that the K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF) reaches persons with disabilities.

She also confirmed that youth and women empowerment funds will include those with disabilities.

“The K100 million allocated for youth empowerment and the K100 million for women’s empowerment will also benefit youth and women with disabilities through business loans.

“I am taking these steps to ensure that persons with disabilities are direct beneficiaries and not left out of these initiatives,” said Ansah.

She  further emphasized that the farm input subsidy programme should include all eligible persons with disabilities.

The VP urged government institutions to support MACODA and its weaving factory, which provides skills and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

This year’s Flag Week carries the theme:’Championing Disability Rights Through Reporting and Action’, highlighting the need for awareness, advocacy, and practical interventions to improve the lives of persons with disabilities.
