DPP aspirant Lightwell Mahowe rallies youth support in Mzimba Solola with development pledges

By Burnett Munthali
A young aspiring politician, Lightwell Mahowe, who is eyeing the Mzimba Solola parliamentary seat on a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ticket, has urged fellow youth to rally behind him in the upcoming 2025 general elections.
Speaking on Saturday during a community engagement, Mahowe called on the youth to vote for him if they want to see meaningful development and have their voices heard in national decision-making.

To demonstrate his commitment to development, Mahowe donated steel window frames, doors, and bags of cement toward the completion of a long-stalled court structure at Zubayumo Makamo in the constituency.
He also donated cement to Bokola Primary School to support ongoing infrastructure development efforts.
Mahowe said the donation was inspired by the community’s prolonged struggle to complete the court building, which has compromised access to justice in the area.
He promised that if elected into office, he would prioritize youth empowerment through vocational skills training and ensure that more health facilities are built in the constituency.
In response, Inkosana Ng’onomo Zubayumo Makamo expressed appreciation for Mahowe’s gesture and praised his proactive approach to community needs.
The traditional leader noted that several past parliamentarians failed to complete the court structure and urged Mahowe to continue supporting development efforts if elected.
Meanwhile, the push for inclusive politics in the country is receiving international support ahead of the 2025 general elections.
With funding from the European Union, organizations such as Oxfam and the Women’s Legal Resource Center (WOLREC) are working to promote active participation of women, youths, and people with disabilities in political processes.
The initiative aims to create a more representative political landscape in Malawi by empowering marginalized groups to engage in democratic governance.
As the 2025 polls draw nearer, Mahowe’s appeal to the youth and his early contributions to local development may prove influential in shaping voter sentiment in Mzimba Solola.
