Malawi’s Minister of Health, Madalitso Baloyi, spent Friday night working alongside midwives at Mangochi District Hospital’s maternity wing in a symbolic gesture aimed at strengthening maternal healthcare services and recognising frontline health workers.
The minister said the overnight engagement formed part of efforts to gain first-hand experience of the working conditions faced by midwives and other healthcare professionals.
Baloyi explained that the initiative was also intended to express appreciation for the dedication and commitment demonstrated by midwives who provide essential maternal and newborn care across the country.
He said observing the night shift would enable him to better understand the operational challenges confronting healthcare workers and identify areas requiring government intervention.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Health is committed to working closely with doctors, nurses and midwives in its efforts to improve the quality of healthcare services in Malawi.
He described healthcare professionals as indispensable partners in the government’s drive to strengthen the country’s health system and improve patient outcomes.
Baloyi emphasised that supporting frontline medical personnel remains central to the ministry’s broader agenda of enhancing healthcare delivery nationwide.
He added that regular engagement with health workers allows policymakers to make more informed decisions based on the realities experienced in hospitals and health facilities.
One of the midwives at Mangochi District Hospital, Olive Munthali, welcomed the minister’s visit and described it as a demonstration of leadership and commitment to the welfare of healthcare workers.
Munthali said Baloyi’s decision to work alongside midwives had boosted staff morale and strengthened the relationship between the Ministry of Health and frontline healthcare professionals.
She expressed hope that the minister’s first-hand experience would contribute to practical solutions aimed at improving working conditions and the delivery of maternal healthcare services.
The initiative reflects the government’s efforts to foster closer collaboration with healthcare workers while advancing reforms intended to improve the quality, accessibility and efficiency of Malawi’s public health system.
