Minister of Natural Resources, Energy, and Mining, Jean Mathanga, has assured Malawians of reduced load-shedding as the government intensifies efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix through solar power generation.

Speaking today after inspecting the Electricity Generation Company Limited (EGENCO) Salima Solar Power Plant Project at Nanjoka in Salima, Mathanga highlighted that the first phase of the project, with a capacity of 10 megawatts, is expected to be completed by December this year.

She emphasized that this initial phase will add significant capacity to the national grid, contributing to a more stable and reliable electricity supply.

Mathanga further stated that her ministry will engage the Ministry of Finance to mobilize the required foreign exchange to fast-track the project’s completion, underlining the government’s commitment to ensuring a resilient and sustainable energy sector.

On his part, EGENCO Chief Executive Officer Maxon Chitawo noted that the company requires approximately $2.6 million to bring in commissioning engineers and an additional $1.6 million for power storage batteries.

The Salima Solar Power Project, with a total budget of $13.5 million, is expected to eventually generate 50 megawatts upon full completion, with the first 10-megawatt phase currently underway.

The project reflects Malawi’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy sources, reduce reliance on hydropower, and ensure energy security for households and businesses nationwide.
