House confirms Luhanga as new police IG

Parliament on Thursday confirmed Richard Luhanga as the new Inspector General (IG ) of the Malawi Police Service(MPS ).
Luhanga was appointed by president Arthur Peter Mutharika on 5 October 2025 in line with Section 154(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, which mandates that the Inspector General is appointed by the President and confirmed by a majority vote in the National Assembly.

Presenting the motion in Parliament, Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito described Luhanga as a seasoned and highly accomplished police officer whose nearly three decades of dedicated service have prepared him well to lead the institution.
Born on 9 June 1971 in Muwa Village, Traditional Authority(T/A) Chikulamayembe, Rumphi District, Luhanga holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (Strategic Management) and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Malawi.
With 28 years of experience, Luhanga has risen through the ranks from Constable and has built a strong record in police administration, operations, planning, and reform, both nationally and internationally.
His appointment is expected to bring renewed focus on professionalism, accountability, and modern policing strategies.
