Youth-Led Agri-Tech innovations key to transforming Malawi’s agriculture sector

By Jones Gadama
Director of Animal Health and Livestock Development, Julius Chulu, has emphasized the importance of youth-led agri-tech innovations in transforming Malawi’s agriculture sector.
Chulu made the remarks during an award ceremony for top young innovators who pitched solutions to improve farming in the country.

The event, part of the AYuTe Africa Challenge Malawi, recognized eight young innovators who developed tools for mechanization, market access, and farmer information systems.
Chulu expressed optimism about the potential of youth-driven solutions, saying, “If the youth can create such solutions, then we’re heading in the right direction.”
Tamani Nkhono Mvula, Board Chairperson of Heifer International Malawi, highlighted that 23% of youth in agri-food systems are not using technology, emphasizing the need to involve them more. The AYuTe Africa Challenge Malawi aims to support youth-driven technologies that benefit smallholder farmers.
The innovations showcased demonstrate the potential of youth-led agri-tech solutions to drive positive change in Malawi’s agriculture sector.
