Concerned Citizen Says Will of the People Is Supreme

By Vincent Gunde

A concerned Malawian citizen, Mrs. Elizabeth Kalinda Banda from Area 51 in Lilongwe, has stated that the will of the people is supreme and warned those opposing it that they will face defeat.

Banda claimed that Vitumbiko Mumba has been treated as an outcast in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and seen as a threat to the party’s vice presidency. She alleged that senior MCP members are working to undermine him politically.

She said Mumba was set to win the MCP primary for Mzimba Central Constituency, even if elections were held in his absence, against presidential advisor Adamson Mkandawire. However, the will of the people prevailed, leading Mumba to seek justice in court.

The Mzuzu High Court has since ordered the MCP to conduct fresh primaries for the constituency, a decision Banda described as embarrassing for the party and President Lazarus Chakwera, who has remained silent on the matter.

She called this a lesson for the MCP to respect the people’s will, adding that many did not expect the court to issue an injunction against the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for rejecting independent auditors and insisting on using Smartmatic machines for vote transmission.

Banda accused the MCP of using public funds to manipulate key institutions but said God is revealing His power by siding with the people, as seen in the court’s ruling against MEC and its alleged MCP influence.

In Mumba’s case, she noted that the same MCP National Executive Committee (NEC) members who oppose him will now oversee the fresh primaries, yet he is poised to win.

“Mumba’s victory against his own party is like two elephants fighting for the same grass,” Banda said.

She advised Mkandawire to withdraw from the race to protect his legacy, warning that he cannot defy the people’s will. She also urged him to save his money instead of spending it on a losing campaign with elections just a month away.

Finally, Banda cautioned Mumba to be wary of false allies within the MCP, advising him to tighten his security and trust no one. She congratulated him on his court victory.
