United for Change: A national call for collective action

By Burnett Munthali

As a new week dawns, Malawians are reminded of the enduring wisdom of an old African proverb, recently shared by Atupele Muluzi on his Facebook page.

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

These words, deeply rooted in the continent’s shared heritage, speak volumes at a time when Malawi stands at a crossroads—grappling with economic hardship, questions of governance, and a thirst for transformational leadership.

The message is clear: meaningful progress cannot be achieved in isolation.

It requires the unity of people bound by a common vision for a better tomorrow.

At the heart of this message is a growing movement that seeks to reawaken the national spirit.

It is not a movement of empty slogans or hollow promises.

Rather, it is a people-first mission—one that unapologetically puts Malawians at the centre, prioritizing dignity, justice, and opportunity for all.

In a country where so many feel left behind, unheard, and unrepresented, this message resonates deeply.

It reminds us that real change begins with collective effort.

When citizens unite behind a shared purpose, they become an unstoppable force for good.

Dignity stands as the first pillar of this emerging movement.

It calls for a Malawi in which every citizen—regardless of background, gender, tribe, or region—is treated with respect and fairness.

At a time when inequality threatens national cohesion, this vision of dignity reaffirms a fundamental truth: everyone matters.

No voice is too small, and no community is too remote to be heard.

The second pillar is opportunity.

The movement envisions a nation where young people can find meaningful employment.

It envisions a country where entrepreneurs have access to capital and markets.

It also envisions a future where every student receives an education that prepares them for the world ahead.

It seeks to break down the structural barriers that have long held Malawians back.

It aims to replace these obstacles with pathways to progress, growth, and self-reliance.

The final and most powerful pillar is hope.

Hope fuels the fight for a better future—even when the odds feel overwhelming.

It is hope that gives people the courage to vote.

It is hope that gives people the strength to speak out.

It is hope that motivates people to organize and demand better.

It is hope that lifts communities in times of hardship and keeps them pushing forward.

In today’s Malawi, hope is not an abstract ideal—it is a daily necessity.

Hope is what keeps dreams alive and the nation moving.

This is why the call to action extends beyond politics.

It is bigger than any single party, figure, or ideology.

It reaches into every corner of the nation—from the cities to the villages, from classrooms to marketplaces, from farms to boardrooms.

Every Malawian has a role to play.

Every voice counts.

The movement urges us to rise above divisions.

It calls on us to build, together, a country that works for everyone.

As the week unfolds and the realities of everyday struggle persist, Malawians must remember something important.

No leader, no party, and no policy alone can change this country.

True transformation lies in the collective will of the people.

It lies in unity.

It lies in shared sacrifice and shared purpose.

Change is not waiting at the gates.

It is already taking root—germinating in our conversations.

It is growing in our collective demands.

It is blossoming in the dreams we dare to share.

This movement—anchored in dignity, driven by opportunity, and sustained by hope—is no longer a whisper.

It is a growing voice of a nation determined to rise.

The journey ahead may be long and difficult.

But if Malawians choose to walk it together—with solidarity and resolve—there will be no limit to how far we can go.
