Malawi strengthens border security with IOM support

By Shaffie A Mtambo

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has received two customized vehicles from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to enhance security and efficiency at border posts.

The vehicles are part of the Data Analysis System (Midas) developed for the Immigration Department under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (Satcp) with financial support from the World Bank.

Minister of Homeland Security Peter Ezekiel Ching’oma emphasized that border security is a priority for the government.

“This is why we are already looking ahead to the next phases of the border management project,” Ching’oma said.

IOM Chief of Mission Nomagugu Hanyana noted that Midas will enable Malawi to achieve secure, efficient, and modernized border management, contributing to national security, economic growth, and improved migration governance.

The support from IOM and the World Bank demonstrates the importance of international cooperation in strengthening border management and promoting economic development.

The acquisition of the vehicles and the Midas system is expected to improve Malawi’s border management capabilities, facilitating smoother cross-border movement of people and goods while combating transnational crimes.

A truck procured as a mobile border post is also expected to arrive soon, further enhancing the country’s border management infrastructure.
