High Court rejects Chilumpha’s application to drop his treason case

The High Court of Malawi sitting in Blantyre on Monday September 16,2024, rejected an application by former vice-president Cassim Chilumpha for a permanent stay and discharge of his treason case.
Dismissing the application,High Court Judge Ruth Chinangwa observed that a similar application was made in 2008, and the court decided to continue the case with a jury.
She further expressed her willingness to expedite the treason case, which has taken about 18 years since its commencement in 2006.
Chilumpha and his co-accused Yusuf Matumula are accused of plotting to assassinate former president Bingu wa Mutharika.
The case has been delayed multiple times due to various applications.
