By Chisomo Phiri
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has completed its National Executive Committee (NEC) lineup with the appointment of 52 members, including deputies and ordinary members.
Notably, Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Mia has been appointed second deputy president, making her the second female vice president of the party.
This move marks a significant milestone in the party’s efforts to promote gender diversity in leadership.
Other key appointments include Uladi Mussa, former vice president of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for the central region, who joins MCP as second deputy director of campaigns.
Ken Msonda, a former DPP member, has been appointed second deputy publicity secretary.
Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo takes on the role of deputy director of legal affairs, a position he previously held before losing to current director George Kadzipatike at the convention.
Additionally, former MCP vice president Harry Mkandawire, strategist Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma, and Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba have been appointed ordinary members of the NEC.
Founded in 1959 by Orton Chirwa, Aleke Banda and other leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress (NAC),MCP is Malawi’s oldest political party.
It was formed as a successor party to the banned NAC when the country, then known as Nyasaland, was under British rule.
The MCP, under Hastings Kamuzu Banda, presided over Malawian independence in 1964, and from 1966 to 1993 was the only legal party in the country.
It has continued to be a major force in the country since its birth.
