Martha Chizuma Not Decided On Renewing Her Contract

Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Martha Chizuma, says she has not decided whether to express interest to renew her contract which expires on May 31.

Her statement contradicts reports that the Office of the President and Cabinet rejected her application for renewal. 

“There is no OPC rejection because there has not been any intention to renew my contract The law allows renewal. I can choose to express intention to renew or not . But I am yet to decide on that,” she said.

“I  hope to finalise two projects which I have been heavily involved in that are almost coming to an end before I do my report and proceed on leave,” she says.

As Malawi approaches a crucial moment with the imminent expiry of the contract of the Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on 31 st May, 2024, the nation stands at a carrefours. The time in office of the current Director General, appointed in 2021, has seen notable walk in the fight against corruption.

17 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have underscored the need to ensure that the decision to either renew Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma’s contract or replace her is free from political interference.

On Tuesday 9 April, 2024, government was reported to have rejected an application from the embattled Director General (DG) of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Ms Martha Chizuma, for the renewal of her contract, according to media reports.

Highly reliable sources at the Capital Hill tipped that Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC), Ms Colleen Zamba, turned down her application .
