Jeffrey calls for DPP’s National Governing Council meeting
By Dean Chisambo
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary General(SG) Grazelda Jeffrey has called for a National Governing Council(NGC) meeting on December 6 2023, in preparation for an elective convention.
She made the call yesterday in Lilongwe during a press conference she organized.
Jeffrey told the news conference that the delegates at the meeting, will among other things agree on the date to hold party’s elective convention.
The DPP SG further told the press conference that she already informed the party’s president Peter Mutharika at the impending NGC meeting arguing that the decision to have NGC meeting follows a high court order.
But in his reaction, DPP Spokesperson Shadrick Namalomba trashed Jeffrey’s presser.
“The press conference was conducted without the party’s blessing,” said Namalomba.
He described Jeffrey’s remarks made at the press as mere noise arguing that she is simply attempting to get recognition.
“Take it as noise. That is not the stand of the party. It is not true that she has been in touch with Professor Mutharika. After all, she is an interested party,” he added.
In September this year, the High Court in Lilongwe ordered DPP to hold a convention within 90 days.
Initially, the former governing party was supposed to hold a convention mid this year but the conference was shifted to next year.
DPP has been facing a leadership crisis since it was booted out of power in the court sanctioned Presidential elections in 2020.
