Two in police custody over car breaking, theft in Lilongwe

Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody two people on suspicion that they have been breaking into vehicles parked in public places such as shopping malls and public car parking lots.

According to Lilongwe police publicist Hastings Chigalu the two have been identified as Mkhoya Makina, 38, and Evance Moffat, 37.

Chigalu said the two are among the suspected thieves identified in a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage captured at Nail Tech Tradings in Area 5 on June 2 2023, where they stole cash amounting to K36 million belonging to MacLean Sikumbaba.



“They are also suspected to have stolen items in vehicles at Kamuzu Central Hospital, Sana Mega Stores and Lilongwe City Mall parking lots, among others.

“The suspects have been on the police wanted list of criminals. Our investigation established that they have stolen huge sums of money and electronics such as laptops and cellphones after breaking into the vehicles,” said Chigalu.

He added :”Police have since recovered K5 million from Makina.”

According to Chigalu, the suspects will appear in court soon to answer applicable charges.

Mkhoya Makina comes from Mwandovi Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Wasambo in Karonga, while Evance Moffat comes from Phanganya Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kamenyagwaza in Dedza District.
