Infighting continues in DPP: North leadership admonishes Nankhumwa
By Linda Kwanjana
It never rains but pours in the once mighty Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
This was one of the strongest parties having won elections almost three times with its base in the Southern, but now all is water under the bridge.
On Wednesday, leadership for the Northern Region endorsed former President Peter Mutharika as party torch bearer during the 2025 polls.
DPP vice-president for the North Goodall Gondwe issued the call at a press conference held in Lilongwe, urging all the DPP supporters in the north to support Mutharika.
Flanked by the Northern Region governor Mzomera Ngwira and the party’s treasurer Jappie Mhango, Gondwe said Mutharika is the only person who can unite the party and the country.
He further said that Mutharika initiated developmental projects in the Northern Region hence he is the right person for the presidency.
This is clear indication that divisions in the party are so deep. What Gondwe did yesterday was to block aspirants mainly Kondwani Nankhumwa who has been all over campaigning for the position.
Infact what Gondwe, Jappie Mhango and others have done is a sign of no confidence vote.
Political scientists have reportedly commented that with current leadership wrangles happening in DPP it will be very difficult to unseat the current leadership led by President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera which slowly gaining momentum.
