DPP reinstates Mzomera Ngwira as its northern region governor
By Chisomo Phiri
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has reinstated reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira as its northern region governor.
In a statement released yesterday, the Malawi’s main opposition party through its spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba says the reason to reinstate Ngwira is after its thorough review of the High court judgment which found that Ngwira was acquitted for the serious offence of the abuse of office, but convicted him of misuse of office without any benefit occurring to him.
In 2020, Mzimba Senior Resident Magistrate Court sentenced Ngwira to four years imprisonment over abuse of the Constituency Development Fund when he was serving as Member of Parliament for Mzimba Hora Constituency.
But in May this year, Ngwira was released from prison.
Mzuzu High Court judge, Chimwemwe Kamowa made the ruling following Ngwira’s appeal against his conviction and sentence.
