PSA calls for peaceful campaigning

By Chisomo Phiri

The Political Science Association of Malawi (PSA) has called on political parties in the country to refrain from acts of political violence during the campaign period.

PSA President Henry Chingaipe made the appeal during a High-Level Dialogue on Elections organized by the Institute of Policy Interaction in Lilongwe on Friday.

Chingaipe noted that political violence often stems from holding campaign events at the same venue or in close proximity, as well as from the practice of declaring certain areas as party strongholds, which can effectively render them inaccessible to other parties.

On his part, governance and elections expert Augustus Magolowondo urged political parties to engage youth in more constructive roles, such as election monitoring and leading campaign activities, rather than using them as instruments of violence.

The event brought together representatives from political parties, security institutions, and civil society organizations.

The campaign period officially launched on July 14, 2025, with both the police and political parties pledging their commitment to a peaceful and violence-free campaign season.
