By Burnett Munthali

Former president of Malawi and current leader of the People’s Party (PP), Dr. Joyce Banda, has said that academic credentials alone cannot solve the governance and economic challenges currently afflicting the nation.

She made these remarks during the party’s Youth For Change forum held in Lilongwe, emphasizing that Malawi needs more than just educated leaders to overcome its developmental hurdles.

Dr. Banda stated that if given another opportunity to govern, she would transform all the struggling sectors within six months.

She attributed her confidence to divine guidance, declaring that it was through God’s wisdom that she was able to bring meaningful change during her previous two-year tenure.

The former head of state reaffirmed her belief that she can replicate the transformation she delivered during her time in office.

“There is no rocket science; leadership is a love affair,” Dr. Banda declared, drawing applause from the audience.

She elaborated that effective leadership involves forming a deep emotional connection with the people, suggesting that leaders must fall in love with their citizens to earn their trust and affection in return.

Dr. Banda stressed that her ultimate goal is to uplift the lives of vulnerable communities who continue to live in abject poverty.

She called on young people to be part of the transformation agenda, reminding them that meaningful change requires passion, vision, and empathy for the suffering masses.

Her remarks come at a time when Malawi is grappling with economic instability, high unemployment, and widespread discontent with the current leadership.

The Youth For Change forum served as a platform for Dr. Banda to re-engage with young people and reiterate her political vision grounded in servant leadership and social justice.

She concluded her address with a passionate plea for national unity, urging Malawians to put aside divisions and rally behind leaders who have both the heart and experience to rescue the nation.
