Joyce Banda vows to restore wealth to small Business owners, pledges economic reforms

By Burnett Munthali | 8 July 2025
Former President and People’s Party (PP) leader Dr. Joyce Banda has called for the restoration of wealth and resources to the small business community, saying the time has come for money taken from them to return where it belongs.
Dr. Banda made the remarks in the city of Zomba, where she met with small-scale business operators to listen to their concerns and discuss practical ways to resolve the challenges they face.

Speaking passionately, Banda emphasized that national development begins at the grassroots level, with small-scale entrepreneurs at the center of the economy.
She lamented that the current system has sidelined these crucial players, making it difficult for the country to make meaningful progress.
To illustrate her commitment to small businesses, Banda cited her past initiative as President, where she provided 500 motorcycles to launch the now-thriving Kabaza motorcycle taxi business.
She highlighted that the project had significantly transformed lives, and she pledged to expand it even further.
Dr. Banda further assured the gathering that, once back in government, her administration would ensure access to organized loans, youth employment programs, the revival of local industries, and structured agricultural markets.
She also promised to promote artisan work, vocational opportunities, and labor export programs for young people seeking work abroad.
Banda’s message was received with enthusiasm by the small-scale traders in Zomba, many of whom see her return to politics as a potential turning point in their economic future.
As the 2025 General Elections approach, Banda’s focus on grassroots economic empowerment is shaping up to be a central theme in her political comeback.
