Five suspects arrested for theft cases involving child lock system in Mzuzu

By Jones Gadama
In a significant breakthrough, the Mzuzu police have apprehended five men in connection with a series of theft cases involving the use of the child lock system in vehicles within the city.
The suspects, identified as Moffat Gondwe, Harry Mchereka, Lloyd Mponda, Joseph Phiri, and Jafali Maundala, were arrested on June 21, 2025, in different parts of Mzuzu.

According to Deputy Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Cecilia Mfune, the suspects would lure unsuspecting victims into their vehicles, pretending to offer free rides. The vehicles, equipped with child locks, would trap the victims inside, allowing the suspects to steal their phones and money.
Some of the suspects posed as taxi drivers, while others pretended to know their targets.
The arrests were made possible through an intelligence-driven operation launched by the police following several complaints from the public.
The suspects were found using a yellow Daihatsu Essey (RU 7722) and a white Honda Fit (BJ 10084), both of which have been seized by the authorities.
The suspects have already been identified by some of their victims and have admitted to committing some of the thefts. They will appear in court soon to answer theft charges under section 278 of the penal code.
The Mzuzu police commend the public for their vigilance and cooperation in bringing these suspects to justice.
The authorities urge citizens to remain cautious and report any suspicious activities to the police.
This development serves as a reminder for residents to be aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
